Literature Text

I am from drawers decorated with delicate treasures
From books and teddy bears long neglected
I am from the third, fourth, and fifth steps that creak when I don’t step carefully
I am from the cherry tree whose long gone limbs I remember as if they were my own
I’m from sandy beaches and holiday dinners
I’m from the old mutt with a stomach tumor and the swollen leg that ties my uncle to a chair
I’m from cigarettes and loud noise and from a river of invisible tears
I’m from “Mahal kita” and “Don’t wander off too far!”
From a Winter Solstice Song and words that haunt me like ghosts to this day
I’m from Ghost Adventures on Friday nights
I’m from Cebu and Mindanao and pancit
From my mother who kissed the ground when she first stepped on American soil
From the living room full of mementos from a person I wish I knew better
I am the morning glory that can only bloom at night because the sun is too bright
This is a rendition of George Ella Lyon's, "Where I'm From" poem that I had to do for Literature. Quite proud of this piece if I do say so myself. I decided to post it here since I haven't uploaded any writings lately.
